Probably nearer the early 1880s. A view of the crossroads where London Road meets Stoughton (on the right) and Knighton (on the left) Roads.
The surface appears to be cobbles covered over with compacted earth or sand and the horse bus heading back into town is a reminder that there are no tramlines yet (they weren’t laid until c1901).
The large house visible between the trees was originally named Holmdale but is now 362 London Road. Designed by Goddard & Paget, it was built c1879 for the family of Stephen Bennett of boot and shoe manufacturers Snow and Bennett. His partner, Henry Snow, lived next door with is family at Glenwood.
