
Samuel Stone Junior lived at ‘Elms House’ (later ‘Elmfield’) between 1848 and 1874.
Solicitor and Town Clerk between 1835 and his death in 1874, he helped implement the plans of the reformed borough corporation of 1835, managed its affairs and even found time to write a detailed ‘How to’ manual for Justices of the Peace (which is still in use today).
Samuel Stone was a devout Unitarian whose beliefs placed public service above personal enrichment.
