Feature Story: Stoneygate’s first – and grandest – semi-detached house
You may have noticed For Sale signs that have appeared recently in front of 325 London Road on the northern corner of Knighton Road. Built in the 1920s as Delamere, it was converted into a care home in the late 1960s and substantially remodelled and extended in 2005 and 2006 as an overflow premises for the Neurological and Specialist Care Unit across the road at 362 London Road. Since 2017 it has been a student HMO and apartment complex.
What you may not know is that, along with the Stoneygate Baptist Church and several of its neighbours, it stands in the grounds of a demolished early Victorian mansion, The Oaks, which can justifiably claim to be Stoneygate’s first – and definitely its grandest ever – semi-detached family residence.
