The Changing Face of Victorian Stoneygate

Our guided walk on Tuesday 14th June was the first in-person event we had attempted in three years and luckily the weather was kind to us.

On a bright, pleasantly cool summer evening, one guest and nineteen members joined Nick Knight and Neil Crutchley for an enjoyable and informative tour of Victorian houses in and around Knighton Park Road, St Mary’s Road, North Avenue and Duke’s Drive.

‘Change’ was the theme and Nick and Neil’s aim was to show how architectural styles had evolved between the 1830s and ’40s, when Stoneygate first began to attract ‘gentlemen manufacturers’, through the 1860s when villas designed by speculative builders were bought by up-coming stockbrokers, grocers, coal merchants and elastic web makers (both to live in and to rent) and the 1870s, ’80s and ’90s when four of Leicester’s most notable architects built homes in the area for their own families and friends.
